Effective multilateralism is part of Belgium’s DNA. We are founding members of the EU and the UN and have had the honor of serving six times on the UN Security Council. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis demonstrate the importance of working across nations and continents. Together with my team at the Belgian Mission to the UN in New York, I will contribute to the United Nations’ response to such global challenges in line with the “Our Common Agenda” report of the UN Secretary-General. I am particularly proud of Belgium’s contributions to the fields of development and humanitarian affairs, peace and security (we led the Security Council’s engagement on child protection in 2019-2020), and human rights, where we advocate for gender equality, and the rights of minorities as well as those of LGBTIQ+ persons.
